AN ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL
Hebrews 6:19 says, "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." The hope that Paul
speaks about is the certainty of the promises of God that are ours through the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.
The promises are safe and secure because Jesus entered the inner sanctuary behind the curtain on our behalf.
How much do we need this hope? It is greatly needed because of the crumbling foundations that are all around us.
The present political situation in America is reeking havoc in the hearts of lovers of freedom and democracy. There
is an uneasiness in the land because of the direction we are heading. Each day that passes by and each new decision
that is made by those in power, drives another peg into the heart of God-fearing citizens.
Concerned and informed Christians are well aware of the situation and what is going on in the land. Because we
know the Lord and His Word, we are not people in darkness. We test and measure all things according to God’s Holy
Word.
If America fails and falls and goes the way of other once-great countries, then the only thing that will sustain
us individually is that "anchor for the soul". The only sure thing and stable thing is our faith in Jesus
Christ and the promise that is ours in the future life. That must remain always our anchor for our souls. Nations
come and go. They rise and fall. But the child of God can face adversity because of the promises of God. Our
forefathers died in the arena at Rome because of their faith. It may come to that for Christians in our generation.
But for now, we have not yet resisted to the point of shedding our blood.
A bright hope for the Christian is the realization that our God will ultimately deal with the enemies of the
cross. It will not go well for them, but it will go well for us. Let us cling to our faith and especially
scriptures like Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up." Yes, "we have this hope as an anchor for the soul."
